2026 FIFA World Cup Final in New York/New Jersey: The Complete Fan Guide

The biggest match in the sport’s history kicks off at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 19, at what FIFA calls New York New Jersey Stadium, better known to anyone who’s watched a Giants or Jets game as MetLife Stadium. Getting there sounds simple until the actual logistics show up: sold-out parking, capped train tickets, a longer-than-most-fans-expect walk, and a bag policy strict enough to catch international visitors off guard.

None of it is complicated once you know what to expect.

Where the Match Actually Happens

One MetLife Stadium Drive is located within the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey, roughly 8 miles west of Midtown Manhattan.

  • Bergen County towns like Teaneck, Rutherford, and Hackensack surround the venue and hold most of the convenient hotel inventory.
  • Manhattan, across the river, gives visitors the fuller city experience at the cost of a longer trip on match day.
  • East Rutherford and Carlstadt split the difference, close enough to walk on a normal day but the same security perimeter and walking ban apply to guests here too once Final day arrives, meaning even a nearby hotel still requires ground transportation like everyone else.

Hotels Near the Stadium

Hotel strategy here comes down to one tradeoff: full Manhattan experience, or shorter transit and less post-match stress.

Rooms in all four fill fast the closer the Final week gets, and prices climb accordingly.

Flying In: Picking the Right Airport

Three airports serve the region, and they aren’t interchangeable this close to the Final.

  • Newark Liberty (EWR) sits closest to the stadium and has the fastest ground commute of the three.
  • JFK and LaGuardia both work, too, connecting to New Jersey via the Port Authority Bus Terminal and the region’s rail network, though they add real distance compared to Newark’s more direct shot at the Meadowlands.

Long layovers or early arrivals at Newark leave hours to fill ahead of a hotel check-in. Newark’s own lounge scene, from United’s Polaris and Club spaces to Delta’s Sky Club in Terminal A, offers arriving fans a better place to wait than a crowded gate area.

Getting to the Stadium

There is no general spectator parking on stadium property for any World Cup match, and Final-specific parking sold out well in advance. American Dream Mall runs roughly 5,000 ticket-holder-only spots at around $225 per match through a connected walkway, but those Final-day spots are already gone. Vehicle access to the stadium is restricted to FIFA-permitted vehicles only.

That leaves four real ways in:

  • NJ Transit’s Meadowlands Rail Line: any NJ Transit train gets fans to Secaucus Junction, about ten minutes from Penn Station, where a match-day-only shuttle train covers the final stretch directly to the stadium. Round-trip fare runs around $98. Tickets are capped at 40,000 per match day, sold only through the NJ Transit app in advance, and unavailable at station kiosks on the day of the match.
  • The official shuttle: roughly $20 round trip, picking up from three hubs in New York City plus a park-and-ride in Hackensack. Booking in advance is required, and allocations are limited.
  • Rideshare and taxis: drop fans at a designated zone near the Meadowlands Racing and Entertainment track, 1.3 miles from the stadium entrances, a walk of roughly 25 minutes each way. Surge pricing peaks hardest in the two to three hours leading up to kickoff and for a couple of hours after the final whistle.
  • A private chauffeur: works through the same designated drop-off zone as rideshare, minus the surge pricing or the scramble to find a car in a crowd of tens of thousands doing the same thing at once. A vehicle set up around Final-day logistics manages the hour-by-hour questions that a standard rideshare booking doesn’t.

Direct walking straight to the stadium isn’t permitted on match days for security reasons, so even fans staying within sight of the venue still need to route through one of these official channels.

The Bag Policy That Catches Fans Off Guard

FIFA’s clear bag policy applies at the stadium and on every official stadium-bound service, NJ Transit and the shuttle both included:

  • Bags capped at 12 by 12 by 6 inches, and must be clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC.
  • Suitcases and anything with a rigid frame get turned away entirely, except small, non-clear wallet clutch bags up to 4.5″ x 6.5″.
  • Do not count on bag storage unless FIFA or the NYNJ Host Committee confirms it for your match. Plan to bring only a compliant clear bag.

International fans arriving with standard suitcases need somewhere to store them well ahead of heading to Secaucus Junction, not after discovering the restriction at the gate.

Getting the Hours Right

Kickoff is at 3:00 p.m., but the clock that matters starts well before then. FIFA set the Final on a wider window than the tournament’s earlier matches at this stadium, reflecting the bigger crowd size:

  • 10:00 a.m.: ticketed parking lots open, one hour ahead of the gates.
  • 11:00 a.m.: stadium gates open, a full four hours ahead of kickoff, longer than the standard three-hour window FIFA used for group stage and knockout matches here.
  • 11:00 a.m.: NJ Transit’s ticket-only restriction also kicks in around this point, limiting Penn Station-to-Secaucus boarding to fans holding valid match tickets.
  • 12:00 p.m.: a reasonable target for reaching the stadium grounds, leaving a three-hour cushion for security screening, the Secaucus transfer, and the walk from wherever rideshare drops off.
  • 3:00 p.m.: After the final whistle: the transportation options all converge on the same narrow stretch of Meadowlands road at once, so the exit routinely runs longer than the entrance did.

The standard three-hour arrival rule that applies to other matches here doesn’t quite cover the Final, since FIFA’s extra hour reflects genuinely heavier crowds rather than an arbitrary buffer.

Building the Trip Around the Final

A World Cup Final draws visitors from every direction: fans flying in for the match alone, others already staying for a full trip centered around the tournament, and locals driving up from elsewhere in the tri-state area. Each starting point changes what the day looks like before a single train ticket is bought.

Fans based in the northern suburbs sometimes take the airport leg separately, picking the drive from Bergen County toward Newark whether flights bookend the visit or the trip home comes the next morning. That leg matters more than it seems: a missed connection or a late arrival at Newark eats directly into the three-hour cushion this guide already recommends, and separating the airport question from the stadium question early keeps one bad connection from turning into a missed first half.

A Final Worth Getting Right

MetLife Stadium has hosted Super Bowls and WrestleMania, but nothing quite like this. A World Cup Final hasn’t been held on American soil since the Rose Bowl in 1994, and the crowd converging on the Meadowlands this July will reflect that scale.

None of the logistics here are hard to solve on their own. NJ Transit and shuttle tickets just need to be claimed early, ahead of the 40,000-ticket cap being reached. Driving to a stadium lot was never really an option this time, since there are none. The walk from the rideshare drop-off deserves a spot on the actual day-of plan rather than being an afterthought, and the suitcase stays at the hotel either way. Getting there with no surprises just takes a bit more homework than a regular Sunday game.
